Holiday Party Meeting, December 8th

Members from Colchester, Southeastern CT, Greater Hartford Progressive and Cheshire Clubs

Karen Romaro, President, opened the meeting discussion about the planned January 21st Women’s March in D.C.  Sheila gave a spirited argument encouraging as many members of CFDW clubs as possible to attend.  She remarked that a strong presence is required to receive good press coverage and to alert the incoming President that there are millions of voices that will not be silent.  She continued her plea that Democrats must remain a strong opposing voice to Trump’s shifting policy decisions and that to seem indifferent to his election is to surrender all opportunities for preserving Democratic values and governance.  Karen provided some details about transportation, reporting that buses are leaving from various points in Connecticut.  (Note:  check Google for buses in Connecticut.)  Those wishing to attend are advised that hotels and trains are already booked.  Buses entering D.C. will probably drop people at an MTA station; attendees will take the MTA to the designated meeting area.  So far, the Lincoln memorial has not been approved for the rally.  A motion passed unanimously to encourage all club members to attend and further that the CFDW appropriate up to $500 to provide financial assistance to some members wishing to take a bus and applying for financial assistance.  (Cost of round trip buses was announced at $50-60.)

Karen called upon Hartford President Lelia Bouyer for a report on the fundraiser dinner (or luncheon), which the Hartford DWC has agreed to host.  The purpose of the dinner is to honor women for outstanding service to our Democratic mission.  Each club could nominate one or two women to receive such recognition.  Family and friends as well as chapter members would be invited.  It was determined that each of our eight active clubs should appoint a representative to serve on a planning committee for this event.  In the meantime, it is crucial for each club to discuss this event with members and gain a sense of support.

In other business, Karen announced that the next Executive Board meeting will be hosted by the Cheshire Club on Saturday, February 11th, at noon, at the Manor Inn in the Plainville section of Southington.  Invitations will be forthcoming in January.

Message from our President

Hello Everyone!

Happy Spring!

Special thanks to all the ladies in the Colchester Club for hosting the March CFDW meeting.  The traditional corned beef and cabbage was delicious and put us all in the mood to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the Wearin’ of the Green.  Thanks also to State Representative Linda Orange for her legislative overview of what we can expect from this session.  We all know how difficult the state budget process is and her comments were quite informative.

The Cheshire Democratic Women’s Club is hosting the April meeting and I’m sure the meal will be delicious.  Please note that the April meeting will be held on April 15th, so finish up your taxes early and plan to join us for the evening.  Directions to the Manor Inn are attached.  The contact person for the meeting is Patti Flynn-Harris, Club President.  Hope to see you there!

Also, please mark your calendars for the Bienniel CFDW Workshop to be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Marlbourough Tavern.  This will be a luncheon meeting and we’re hoping for a good turnout.  Liz Duarte is in charge of the program and has already lined up guest speakers to discuss how we can improve ways to use technology and the internet to get our Democratic message out.  It promises to be an exciting day!.  Karen Romero, President of the Colchester Club has agreed to organize and solicit quality items and/or baskets for a raffle. Each club will be asked to donate a raffle item, much like what we had for the Eastern Regional meeting in November, 2008.  We’ll need the support of all of you to make this workshop a success.

Club Presidents, please get the word out to your members about the workshop meeting and the monthly meeting on April 15th.  Also, if you wish to provide me with email addresses of your club members and interested Democrats, I’ll be glad to add them to my contact list for CFDW.

Hope to see you on April 15th!

Joanne LeBeau, President, CFDW
