Biennial Convention Held on May 4th

Our convention was held in the Old Judiciary Room in the Capitol on May 4th. Attorney General George Jepson stopped by to talk with us before our meeting began. Our first speaker was Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty telling us about the latest in Congress and how the Republicans are already coming after her seat. Comptroller Kevin Lembo spoke about the upcoming Health Exchanges preparations for the Affordable Care Act’s expansion in 2014. Lt Governor Nancy Wyman gave more information about what Connecticut is getting ready for the ACA to take full effect. Kelly Lexenburg, graduate of the Women’s Campaign School of Yale University shared how the school helped her and others in running for office and running campaigns.

Our luncheon speaker was Susan Campbell, retired reporter for the Hartford Courant, author, and blogger of Hot-Dogma.com. She told of her childhood and how religion and politics affected her thinking now. She is a liberal Democrat and her story was inspiring for us. After the lunch, we held our business meeting. A resolution was passed regarding the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The resolution will be submitted to the National Federation of Democratic Women’s convention in June.

Officers of the Connecticut Federation of Democratic Women were elected and installed. They are: President Elizabeth Duarte (SECT), 1st Vice President Karen Romero (Colchester), 2nd Vice President Pat Sirois (East Hartford), 3rd Vice President Lelia Boyer (Greater Hartford Progressive), 4th Vice President Judy Villa (Cheshire), Treasurer Debra Dickey (SECT), Recording Secretary Aleta Looker (Cheshire), and Eileen Driscoll (East Hartford). We are all looking forward to working hard for the next 2 years.
