The biennial workshop was held at Marlborough Tavern. The decor, food, and service was great. Kerry (Szeps) Wood gave an informative presentation about websites, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Flickr. We all learned how to better work the web. She showed several candidates’ websites and how they use their site to connect with more people. Ms. Wood explained how Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr work and how we as a Democratic Women’s organization can benefit from these sites.

Stephanie Amanda Rowlette of West Hartford was the recipient of the Fannie Dixon Welch Scholarship. She and her mother joined us for the luncheon and then Past President Ana Gould presented the award to Ms. Rowlette.

The Manor Inn was a great place to have the April meeting. The Italian menu was delicious and we were off in a private area so we could talk very passionately about politics. There was much discussion regarding the Tea Party people and what we can do to counter their voices. We are in favor of creating letters to the editor and writing comments on blogs, Facebook, and newspaper articles. Our May workshop will give us more information about how to effectively use the Web for political purpose.

Message from our President

Hello Everyone!

Happy Spring!

Special thanks to all the ladies in the Colchester Club for hosting the March CFDW meeting.  The traditional corned beef and cabbage was delicious and put us all in the mood to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the Wearin’ of the Green.  Thanks also to State Representative Linda Orange for her legislative overview of what we can expect from this session.  We all know how difficult the state budget process is and her comments were quite informative.

The Cheshire Democratic Women’s Club is hosting the April meeting and I’m sure the meal will be delicious.  Please note that the April meeting will be held on April 15th, so finish up your taxes early and plan to join us for the evening.  Directions to the Manor Inn are attached.  The contact person for the meeting is Patti Flynn-Harris, Club President.  Hope to see you there!

Also, please mark your calendars for the Bienniel CFDW Workshop to be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Marlbourough Tavern.  This will be a luncheon meeting and we’re hoping for a good turnout.  Liz Duarte is in charge of the program and has already lined up guest speakers to discuss how we can improve ways to use technology and the internet to get our Democratic message out.  It promises to be an exciting day!.  Karen Romero, President of the Colchester Club has agreed to organize and solicit quality items and/or baskets for a raffle. Each club will be asked to donate a raffle item, much like what we had for the Eastern Regional meeting in November, 2008.  We’ll need the support of all of you to make this workshop a success.

Club Presidents, please get the word out to your members about the workshop meeting and the monthly meeting on April 15th.  Also, if you wish to provide me with email addresses of your club members and interested Democrats, I’ll be glad to add them to my contact list for CFDW.

Hope to see you on April 15th!

Joanne LeBeau, President, CFDW

Our meeting at the Colchester Club was held in the historic Cragin Memorial Library. The room was beautifully decorated with shamrocks and green decor for St. Patrick’s Day. The meal of corned beef and cabbage was delicious but the green desserts were the best!

Members from the Colchester, East Hartford, Hartford Progressive, and Groton Clubs attended. Our guest speaker was Linda Orange, State Representative for the Colchester area. She gave dismal news of the State budget and how the Governor is NOT responding to the needs of the citizens. It was very clear how important it is to elect a Democrat for Governor. We had discussion of the upcoming elections in November and that all incumbents will have a fight on their hands. We need to energize our base and make sure Democrats get out and vote. One member shared about the book: The Family by Jeff Sharlet. It is about C Street and the power they have with the Republican party. If you want to get “fired up” to get Democrats out to vote, read the book!
